At present, there are 18 residents and 60 research and clinical fellows who have completed their residency courses and now work at their respective research laboratories or special clinics. Thirteen doctors belong to the postgraduate school. The residency course lasts 3 years, during which period residents learn general ophthalmology, including surgical techniques under an operation microscope. After completing the residency training, some of residents continue their clinical work at other hospitals and others start research toward the completion of their thesis.

Clinics
Altogether, approximately 5000 new outpatients are seen every year in our hospital, which has a total of 44 beds. Residents work in the ambulatory section and take care of inpatients. Special services are provided in units devoted to ophthalmic subspecialities such as cornea, glaucoma, retina, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, orthoptics, diabetic retinopathy, and genetic and color blindness problems. The staff members supervise the ambulatory and special services depending on each one's speciality.
Most of the inpatients suffer from cataract, glaucoma, corneal diseases, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and strabismus. Surgeries are performed in the operating theater of the hospital under operating microscopes. Approximately 2000 cases underwent operations in our department. Surgeries can be monitored by TV system which is mounted on operating microscopes. Since multiple observers can watch the same images and share findings, this system has a great potential in training and promoting discussion.

Research
Research topics in our department cover a variety of fields in ophthalmology; e.g. ocular pharmacology, regenerative medicine in the cornea and retina, aqueous humour dynamics, immunology and molecular biology. Special laboratories for physiology, pharmacology and genetic engineering have been established.
The Department of Ophthalmology, University of Tokyo School of Medicine, was founded in 1989. Since then, the department has contributed to Japanese ophthalmology not only by educating a large number of eminent ophthalmologists in Japan, but also by producing significant basic research in ophthalmology.
The department has been active in collaboration with ophthalmologists around the world, sponsoring international ophthalmological meetings, educating fellows from foreign countries and sending our staff and fellows abroad.
