1. Objective and Keywords
Objective: We aim for medical treatment reform and social contribution
by integrating and practical research in the boundary area of medical and
information engineering, and develop open-minded and tender human resources who
can take a leading position on the area.
Keywords on areas offered:
Medical informatics system, Electric medical records for following
generation, Medical information network, Virtual medical information
environment, Computer representation and standardization in medical concept,
Medical knowledge engineering, Hospital information epidemiology, Quality
assessment of health care, Clinical information engineering, Protection of
privacy and encryption, Information security, etc.. 2. Basic Concept of the Departmental
Administration We respect diversity of individual backgrounds and have constructed a framework
for research, making the most of the diversity. We provide a free, independent
environment for education and academic research that each individual can make
use of their ability, through open discussions between researchers and
students.

4. The Department of
Medical Informatics and Economics in Social Medicine Division
Graduate School of Medicine in the University of Tokyo
consists of 11 divisions and one of them is the Division of Social Medicine. The
division has 2 Daikouza; 1) Occupational, Environmental and Preventive Medicine,
and 2) Forensic Medicine, and Medical Informatics and Economics. The Department
of Medical Informatics and Economics belongs to the latter one, the Daikouza of
Forensic Medicine, and Medical Informatics and Economics. As its name suggests,
this Daikouza includes the 2 departments; 1) Medical Forensic, and 2) Medical
Informatics and Economics.
Therefore, our department is accurately
named as the Department of Medical Informatics and Economics in the Daikouza of
Forensic Medicine and Medical Informatics and Economics, the Division of Social
Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo. However,
Daikouza was established because it had been needed on the organization
composition when the Graduate School of Medicine took authorization in the
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a university
with graduate school curriculum. That is, there is little point to mention
Daikouza. By the same token, the name specified as Daikouza is seldom used, and
our department is generally called the Department of Medical Informatics and
Economics at the Division of Social Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, the
University of Tokyo.
The Department of Medical Informatics and
Economics at the Division of Social Medicine offers the Medical Sciences
doctoral course (4-year program) and admission is open to those who graduate
from a 6-year program at the Faculty of Medicine (the School of Medicine), and
those who complete the master course either in the University of Tokyo or any
other institutions (not necessary to be a doctor). Students will acquire Doctor
of Medical Science with completion of required units and passing a doctoral
thesis.
5. The Department of Health
Medical Informatics at the Division of Health Sciences and
Nursing The Department of Medical Informatics and Economics is a
collaborating department with the Division of Health Sciences and Nursing at the
Graduate School of Medicine, and it is called the Department of Health Medical
Informatics. It means, that the department formally belongs to the Division of
Social Medicine, but if it is regarded from the Division of Health Sciences and
Nursing, it is the Health Medical Informatics field of the division. For this
reason, most faculty members at the Department of Medical Informatics and
Economics supervise students and teach lectures at both departments. At the
Department of Health Medical Informatics within the Division of Health Sciences
and Nursing, the department offers the master course in Health Science and
Nursing (2-year program) and the Health Sciences and Nursing doctoral course
(3-year program). In the master course, students will acquire Master of Health
Sciences with completion of required units and passing a master’s thesis. In the
doctoral course, students will acquire Doctor of Health Sciences with completion
of required units and passing a doctoral thesis.
6. Medical Informatics and
Economics in the Master’s Course in Medical Sciences
Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, offers
the master course in Medical Sciences. The course was established for students
who graduate from faculties other than a 6-year program at Faculty of Medicine
and eventually wish to advance to the Medical Sciences doctoral course of the
University of Tokyo. It enables students to enroll in the department they plan
to carry out their research for Doctor of Medical Science. (the entrance
examination required for enrollment in Medical Sciences doctoral course) In this
Master’s course, all students entering the course spend the first four months
taking formal coursework for students of all divisions, and then will decide
which department they wish to affiliate with. At the department students are
expected to conduct their research for the Master and complete a master’s thesis
in the last one and an half year. They will acquire the Master’s degree (in
Medical Sciences) with completion of required units and passing a master’s
thesis. Our department also accepts students in this course.
7. Relations with the
Department of Planning, Information and Management, and Medical Engineering and
Supply Center of the University of Tokyo Hospital
The
professor of the department doubles as Director of the Department of Planning,
Information and Management and as Director of Medical Engineering and Supply
Center within the Central Clinical Facilities (Department of Clinical Service)
in the University of Tokyo Hospital. Since the professor routinely administers
the department and the center with staffs, his graduate school education and
research take place in these places. The Department of Planning, Information and
Management serves as a practical place that deals with information analysis
concerning future projects and planning for the hospital by medical informatics
system. Furthermore, it is also in charge of planning, designing, development
and operation of the medical informatics system for the whole hospital. The
Medical Engineering and Supply Center handles distribution management of medical
devices , disinfection and sterilization, management of Medical Engineering
devices. It becomes a feature that the Department of Medical Informatics and
Economics provides a practical place for graduate school education and research
because the department is strongly connected with the applied field of medical
informatics system and distribution management of information. In addition,
the Department of Planning, Information and Management in the University of
Tokyo Hospital was newly established on April 1, 2003, after integration of the
Hospital Computer Center and the Project Team for Hospital Development, which
separately existed until the end of March, 2003.
