Overview of the Research Ethics Committee

Purpose 

The Research Ethics Committee has been established to examine ethical issues that arise in medical research involving human subjects and clinical application of medical research in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and government guidelines. Its scope is researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo and the University of Tokyo Hospital.

Functions

The committee has two functions, which apply to the activities of the Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo and the University of Tokyo Hospital.
  • 1) The committee examines and monitors protocols for research involving human subjects and the publication of research findings.
  • 2) The committee studies and deliberates on how medical ethics should be approached and handled, as necessary.
